One of the things expats love most about Singapore is eating out. And as this island is a melting pot of cultures, so the variety of restaurants available here are second to none.
If you’re looking for great food in an elegant location, look no further than the historic Dempsey Hill.
This former colonial barracks has been transformed into a community of some of the best restaurants in Singapore, and some tempting high-end retail outlets too.
if you’ve a hankering for a good old-fashioned curry, the delicate flavours of contemporary asian or an excellent bistro classic, Dempsey Hill is the place for you.
P.S. Cafe on Harding Road
We kick off our review of the restaurants in Dempsey with the excellent P.S. Cafe which is one of our very favorite places to eat in Singapore.
There are a few branches of this restaurant in Singapore, but our favourite is at Dempsey Hill because of the spacious interior, lush garden and hearty menu.
A great place for dinner with friends or family, you’re bound to find something to suit you on their extensive menu. Make sure you start with a delicious sharing plate of crisps or veg and dips, the sticky St. Louis Ribs are amazing and the pasta and salads (especially the Pad Thai) are lovely too. You might need to share a dessert because they are both fabulous and enormous. Don’t forget to check out their extensive drinks menu which has a great selection of cocktails and a fabulous range of gins to choose from. A firm favorite!

What makes Jim Thompson so successful, is the combination of sumptuous surroundings and consistently excellent food.
We love the signature curries and the wonderfully fragrant seafood. There’s a good selection for vegetarians and even you aren’t a dessert lover, the delectable mango sticky rice is absolutely divine.
Such a beautiful restaurant is perfect for a special date night, but it’s also a great place to go with a party. If you have house guests, a trip to Jim Thompson will be one they remember for the great food, beautiful decor, and the Thai dancers.
You can choose to eat in the garden if you prefer a more relaxed setting, and the Sunday lunch buffet is great too.

On those days when only a curry will do, check out Samys for great no-frills food.
And when I say no-frills, I mean it. You won’t even get a plate. But the flavors of the curry served up on your banana leaf certainly pack a punch.
If you’re looking for great authentic Indian food in a friendly environment check out this former Civil Service Club Hall.
Service is generally fast too making it a great place to bring larger groups.

The RedDot Brewhouse
We first encountered The Red Dot at its sister restaurant on Boat Quay, and after enjoying tasty burgers and the excellent beer from the microbrewery there, we were keen to try the bar at Dempsey. There’s a really nice outside space here which makes it a favorite with families, especially for weekend lunches, but in the evening it’s a great place to hang out with friends and enjoy a few beers and food in a relaxed setting. Be sure to try their signature green spirulina-infused lager – at least once!
